The Great Mountain

Last Day

OMG, you will not believe what I’m about to tell you… all right I’m going to torture you and make you wait till the end of this paragraph.

I SUMMITTED MOUNT KATAHDIN. Yes, I did it and guess what, I have lots of pictures to prove it, and more. All are going into my great mountain gallery blog post.

So, me, my parents and some friends got up at 4:00 in the morning and drove for an hour and a half to Chimney Pond Trail at Roaring Brook and hiked all the way to Chimney Pond. By then, we were super tired, so we each had a sandwich and took off our hiking boots. After our short rest, we headed to the Saddle Trail. When you break tree line there is this big boulder slope from a rockslide and, get this, my mom is afraid of heights and this is where the magic of the mountain comes in. My mom made it to the top of the rock slide and to the summit despite being afraid of heights!

On the way back down I was having a lot of foot pain and there was this whole big argument about whether we should camp at Chimney Pond for the night or keep going in the dark. Obvi, we decided to go in the dark. We told stories and sang songs. The only thing was, it REALLY worried the family back at Kidney Pond. They were soooooo happy when we came back that they all crowded around our car. Now, I and some others were too tired to talk, so we just had our chicken stew and went to bed. The others wanted to talk, so they slept in very late the next day. All in all, it was a hard trip, but also kinda fun.

For the finale, do you want to know how long we were hiking, 15 1/2 hours!

  3. Dear Cleo,
I am beyond proud of you for your dedication, will and fortitude to not just get to the top of the mountain…but the even harder part…to get back down. You inspired me to go places I never thought I would go, to overcome fear, and to experience deep aliveness. Thank you. I love you and can’t wait for our next adventure! – Mama ❤️🙏

  4. Dear Cleo,

Congratulations!! What an amazing accomplishment. I can’t wait to hear all about it! I think the longest I had ever hiked when I was your age was MAYBE 6 hours, and I’m pretty sure I complained for at least one of those hours. : ) I hope your feet have gotten a chance to rest!

    Can’t wait to see you!
